The settlement patterns of the Chesapeake and New England colonies differed due to geographical, economic, and social factors. The Chesapeake colonies, particularly Virginia and Maryland, developed with a strong focus on agriculture, mainly tobacco cultivation. This led to the establishment of large plantations that depended heavily on indentured servitude and later, enslaved labor (Jaycox, n.d.-a). In contrast, New England colonies like Massachusetts and Connecticut had a more compact settlement pattern, forming towns centered around congregational churches.
