The Boston Massacre and the Coercive Acts
The Coercive Acts of 1774 were a set of harsh laws passed by the British Parliament to suppress colonial resistance, especially in Massachusetts, following the Boston Tea Party. Known to the colonists as the “Intolerable Acts,” these measures included the closure of Boston Harbor, annulment of the Massachusetts Charter, permission for royal officials to be tried in Britain, and an expansion of the Quartering Act.
